Skin blisters can occur anywhere on the skin. Blisters appear as raised lesions on the skin that are thin and filled with fluid. Contact dermatitis or an allergic skin reaction can lead to blisters accompanied by a rash. Contact with poison ivy, oak, or sumac can also cause blisters, as well. Sunburn, heat burns (in reference to second or third degree burns), or frostbite have been known to cause blisters, too. Blood blisters are typically caused by trauma to the skin.
Cold sores or fever blisters are the most common occurrence of lip blisters. Herpes, a sexually transmitted disease causes fever blisters on the lips. These blisters are small and painful and are typically located around the mouth. Blisters in mouth have an average duration of 10 to 14 days, even without treatment. However, steps may be taken to reduce the frequency of cold sores including topical treatments such as, Lidocaine or Benzocaine (Zilactin). Oral antiviral medications such as, Zovirax, Famvir, and Valtrex may help to decrease the duration and lower pain of cold sores, as well.
Rash blisters are caused by a number of underlying diseases and disorders. Rashes associated with blisters are commonly linked to diseases such as, chicken pox, shingles, poison ivy, Dyshidrotic eczema, and scabies, impetigo, which is caused by streptococcus or staphylococcus bacteria. Each of these blisters acccompanied by a rash are treated with different methods and medications that should be determined by a doctor.
